Should you book a digital ticket?

Yes on busy days. Non-residents can book timed tickets on the official ticket site (up to 10 people per purchase, valid only on the booked date). The castle warns that same-day tickets may not be sold at some times when online sales are heavy. To change the date or group size, cancel and buy again before the QR code is scanned.

A digital ticket is not a fast pass. Entry to the main keep is limited to 1,000 people per hour, so you can still queue at the keep on crowded days. At the gate you can pay by QR code, including WeChat Pay and Alipay+.

What a visit looks like

From the main gate to the top of the keep

  1. Otemon Gate and the Sannomaru lawn — free to walk around, and a favourite cherry-blossom spot in spring.
  2. Ticket gate — show your ticket. A drinks vending machine just inside is the only one in the paid area.
  3. The climb — walled paths, gates and slopes wind uphill to the main keep. The castle says it feels like climbing a small hill.
  4. Main keep — take off your shoes and carry them in the bag you are given. Inside, the wooden stairs are steep and narrow.
  5. West Bailey — the long Hyakken Roka corridor along the walls gives a different view of the keep.

What to bring

  • Thick socks or soft indoor shoes: the wooden floors are slippery, and you walk them without outdoor shoes.
  • Your own shoe bag if you have one (a plastic bag is provided).
  • A drink with a lid and a hat in summer: there is no air conditioning inside.
  • Leave pets at home: since March 1, 2026 no pets are allowed in the paid area, and there is no pet-sitting service.

Getting there and parking

From JR or Sanyo Himeji Station, walk about 20 minutes up the wide main avenue. Or take a Shinki bus from the north exit to Otemon-mae and walk 5 minutes. The Himeji Castle Loop Bus (¥210 adults, ¥110 children, stop 6) runs only on weekends, holidays and New Year days from December to February.

Driving? Otemae Park underground parking (大手前公園地下駐車場) has been closed since February 20, 2026 for a renovation expected to last several years. Use Otemon Parking instead: open 24 hours, about 555 spaces, ¥600 for up to 3 hours and ¥900 for up to 24 hours. No reservations, and time spent queuing to leave is charged.

After dark

The castle is lit up in white from sunset until midnight, with a 15-minute seasonal show at 20:00 and 21:00. Seeing it from the Sannomaru lawn is free, but parts of the Sannomaru area close from midnight to 5:00 all year. Cherry blossom dates and evening events change every year; check the city’s announcements for the year you visit.
