A WHOLE DAY

The south for the whirlpools

Build the day around the whirlpool cruise time, wind and tide — and the long drive back.

Plan a whirlpool day

By car: stay in the north

Cross the bridge and keep to northern Awaji: the area around Awaji IC, the Michi-no-Eki Awaji roadside station at the foot of the bridge, a seaside lunch, and one attraction such as Nijigen no Mori in Hyogo Prefectural Awaji Island Park.

A relaxed car day

  1. Morning: leave Kobe and cross the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
  2. Lunch: by the sea or near a roadside station.
  3. Afternoon: one attraction — don’t try for three.
  4. Late afternoon: a roadside station or the coast, then head back before or after the evening traffic.

By bus: a small loop in the north

The Awaji Island Tourism Association’s northern bus itinerary starts from Kobe Sannomiya or Kosoku Maiko, with stops such as Izanagi Jingu shrine, Awaji City Kaori Park, GARB COSTA ORANGE, the Hokudan Earthquake Memorial Park, Michi-no-Eki Awaji, the Iwaya shopping street and the Awaji Jenova Line ferry to Akashi. Pick two or three.

The south: a day for the whirlpools

Seeing the Naruto whirlpools from a cruise boat deserves its own day. The tourism association’s southern course links the Awajishima Bokujo dairy farm, Keino Matsubara pine beach, the Yasutomi Shiratsuchi roof-tile workshop, the whirlpool cruise and the Omiyama viewpoint — about 27 km within the south. Whirlpool size depends on the tide, so check the cruise timetable for your date.

Or the middle: Sumoto and ONOKORO

Central Awaji works around Sumoto town and the Awaji World Park ONOKORO theme park: Mt. Mikuma and the Sumoto Castle ruins, Ohama beach, the Takosenbei no Sato octopus-cracker shop and the Parche fragrance museum with its Kaori no Yu bath — about 25 km in total.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Visiting the north, middle and south on the same day.
  • Forgetting the return trip: bridge and expressway traffic builds up in the evening.
  • Assuming island bus connections will be easy. Plan from the last return service.
  • Treating the whirlpools as a quick add-on.
  • Having no indoor option on a rainy day, especially with children.
