What to see

Construction began in January 1619 under Ogasawara Tadamasa, guided by his father-in-law Honda Tadamasa, lord of Himeji Castle. The castle guarded the main western highway and the Akashi Strait. Its stone walls run about 380 m and stand more than 20 m high.

SOUTH-EAST CORNER

Tatsumi-yagura

An original three-storey corner turret. “Tatsumi” is the old compass name for south-east.

SOUTH-WEST CORNER

Hitsujisaru-yagura

The biggest turret, next to the keep base — larger than the keeps of some small castles, it served as the keep in practice.

Walking route from the station

  1. Leave Akashi Station by the north exit and cross to the park entrance.
  2. Stop at the moat for the classic view of both turrets on the walls.
  3. Follow the park map up to the Honmaru and Ninomaru, then look back over the city towards the sea.

The climb has slopes and steps. Do not climb the stone walls or enter closed areas. Using a stroller or wheelchair? Check the barrier-free information on the official park map first.
