See the castle from the opposite mountain
For the view of Takeda Castle floating above clouds, choose Ritsuunkyo—not the castle entrance. Entry is ¥300 for high-school students and older. Allow about 40 minutes uphill from the viewpoint car park to Observation Deck 1.

Takeda Castle ruins: two of four trails closed since 16 October. After a bear sighting, Asago City has closed the station-back and Hyomei Shrine trails (no lifting notice as of 21 October 2026). From JR Takeda Station use the Tenku bus; by car use the “Yamajo-no-Sato” car park and the paved west trail, or car parks B1/B2 on Route 312 and the south trail. Make noise with a bell or phone as you walk. This does not affect the Ritsuunkyo trail itself, but check the city notice before combining both sites.
Which side of the valley?
Ritsuunkyo (立雲峡) faces Takeda Castle across the valley in Asago, northern Hyogo. You look towards the castle’s stone walls from another mountain. There is no standing castle keep to visit. Choose the viewpoint for the full silhouette; choose the castle grounds to walk among the walls. Doing both means descending and travelling to a separate trailhead.

Photograph the “floating castle”
Start at the Ritsuunkyo car park and hike to one of its observation decks. The ¥300 charge is for Ritsuunkyo, not castle entry.
Walk inside the castle ruins
Use the separate Takeda Castle approach. Castle entry is ¥500 for high-school students and older. The city lists 05:00–17:00 entry from 1 June to 6 December 2026; trail-gate hours differ.
Do not use the castle’s opening time as the access time for Ritsuunkyo. Early-morning collection and access arrangements at the viewpoint are not specified on the facility page; check the official notices before a dawn visit. Asago City · 竹田城跡 / 2026
Pick a viewpoint
| Deck | Distance | Uphill walk |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | About 100 m | About 5 min |
| 2 | About 220 m | 10–20 min |
| 1 | About 810 m | 30–40 min |
The operator lists 10 and 30 minutes for Decks 2 and 1; Asago’s tourism portal allows 20 and 40. Use the longer times when planning. These are one-way walking estimates, not the total visit. The car park is not the viewpoint. 立雲峡 · あさぶら

When clouds are most likely
October and November, from dawn until about 08:00, are the main cloud-viewing window described by Asago’s tourism portal. Its indicative conditions are a cold night followed by clear warmer weather, a day–night difference of at least 10°C and little wind. These are clues, not a forecast or a promise. In clear weather, the castle and valley remain the reason to visit even without clouds. あさぶら
Choose your travel date after checking the local forecast. Do not book a non-refundable trip on the assumption that a sea of clouds will appear.
Getting there and back
-
By train: JR Takeda Station (竹田駅)
Use the JR Bantan Line, not a similarly named station elsewhere. From Himeji, check a connection via Teramae; from the north, check Wadayama. The tourism portal directs visitors to a taxi from Takeda Station to the Ritsuunkyo car park.
-
Arrange both taxi legs
For a dawn arrival, arrange the pickup and return with a taxi company or your accommodation in advance. A taxi waiting at the station before sunrise, its fare and the availability of a return pickup have not been confirmed. Tell the driver “立雲峡”, not “竹田城跡”.
-
By car: use the viewpoint car park
The operator gives about 10 minutes from Wadayama Interchange. Its facility page lists 40 car spaces and 7 microbus spaces; the tourism portal lists 50 spaces. Do not treat either figure as available spaces. Full-size coaches cannot use the narrow approach.
-
Check the return before climbing
Keep the time needed to walk down and reach your booked pickup. Snow can make even the car-park approach impassable; avoid a snowy hike. Allow extra time to transfer to the castle if visiting both sites.
A different roadside facility is named “Takeda Castle Ruins / Ritsuunkyo Parking”. It is not the mountain-side Ritsuunkyo car park. Set the destination to 立雲峡 and check the operator’s access map. Parking charges and early-morning fee-collection hours were not confirmed in the current facility information.
What does the visit cost?
| Visitor | Contribution |
|---|---|
| High-school students and older | ¥300 per person |
| Junior-high students and younger | Free |
| Two adult visitors | ¥600, before transport |
Groups of 20 or more: ¥250 per person. Takeda district residents are exempt. Bring cash as a fallback; the viewpoint’s accepted overseas cards and QR payments were not verified. The city’s cashless list for Takeda Castle does not establish payment methods at Ritsuunkyo. 立雲峡
A pair of adults visiting Ritsuunkyo should start with ¥600, then add rail fares, both taxi legs or driving costs, any parking charge, meals and accommodation. Visiting the castle as well adds another ¥500 per adult: ¥1,600 for the two entry charges for two adults, with transport still extra. No taxi or hotel price is assumed in these totals.
Compare driving and public transport in Hyogo
For a multi-stop trip, compare the route first. The linked guide explains the different driving-document rules for visitors; a driving licence alone is not enough for every country.
Prepare for a dark mountain path
- Light Bring a torch or headlamp. The paths have no installed lighting; a phone battery should not be your only light.
- Footwear and layers Wear shoes suited to uneven uphill paths. Bring water and warm layers for time spent standing at the deck after the climb.
- Turnaround point Deck 3 is closer to the car park; Deck 1 requires the longest climb. Do not interpret a five-minute estimate as proof of step-free access.
- Weather and wildlife Check current restrictions and avoid snow-covered paths. The city recommends making sound to reduce surprise encounters with wildlife.
Watch the walking route
The operator’s walking-guide video helps you picture the path and terrain. The narration is Japanese; the route, costs and cautions are also explained in the text above. Older video scenery does not establish today’s access conditions.
Before you set off
Choose the deck you can comfortably reach, check the weather and current official notices, then confirm the trip to and from the car park. For dawn, the return pickup matters as much as the climb. The visitor information desk is 天空の城, +81-79-674-2120; Japanese-language support is the confirmed contact route, and English support has not been verified.
